For painter Tammie Hunter there are few things, other than family, that can compete with the sheer joy of moving paint on a large canvass."I get very excited; I absolutely love the creative process. Painting is a way that I can express myself - and do a lot of thinking at the same time," she said. A self-taught artist, Tammie says that creativity, in one form or another has been an important part of her life from an early age.
In 2000, while working at the Comox Valley Art Gallery, Tammie realized that she wanted to pursue painting more seriously. In 2003, Tammie took the plunge and held her first solo show in Comox. The show was successful, not only did she receive plenty of positive encouraging feedback, she also sold several paintings. Since then she has not looked back, enjoying a steady stream of shows and sales and commissions.
Tammie is a prolific painter incorporating a wide range of subjects informed by her island environment - fragile flowers swaying in the wind, swirling waves, birds, sea-life and the linear perspective of a cluster of hydro wires against a dark sky. She describes her paintings as invoking a feeling of movement and lightness with fresh lively colours and designs that are constant in her abstract work, large skies and wide open spaces dominate her contemporary landscape paintings
Since moving to North Cowichan in 2009, Tammie paints from her home studio that looks out onto a lovely garden. When she is not painting, she works full time as a resource room advisor for a local employment services centre.
