Sophie Milman
Although she has only been singing seriously for a couple of years, Russian-born Sophie Milman has already got some of the top writers in the music press billing her as “Canada ’s answer to Norah Jones.” This natural singer’s raw talent got her invited to a “Real Divas” program at a local Toronto club. There she was spotted by Toronto jazzman and producer Bill King (who also discovered Jane Bunnett and Kevin Breit), who helped her bring out an impressive debut album last year. The fact that she ’s beautiful doesn’t hurt, but a quick listen to that unexpectedly big, rich voice having its sultry way with everything from Gershwin classics to Russian folk tunes shows that this singer really is something special. With multiinstrumentalist Cameron Wallis, Paul Shrofel piano, Rob Fahie bass, and Robbie Kuster drums.
“Russian-born vocalist Sophie Milman has jazz smarts that singers with twice her experience can’t match. ” - Toronto Star
