Welcome to the 11th edition of Flamenco Guitar Night on Vancouver Island! Tonight’s show features four of Victoria’s highly acclaimed flamenco guitarists: Gareth Owen, Iminah Kani, Juan de Marias, and Jake Lee.
The talent in this group of flamenco guitarists is phenomenal, and you do not want to miss this concert! Everyone is either just back from Andalucía, Spain, or just about to go there. This is your chance to relax and enjoy the finest of Spanish melodies and flamenco rhythms.
Gareth Owen, a world-class flamenco guitarist, has recorded two albums, Gareth Owen Flamenco Guitar and El Cobre. He has performed at many Flamenco Festivals in Canada, at the Dawson City Music Festival, and in Spain, and at tablao performances in Jerez de la Frontera and more recently the festival in Vejer. You can most often hear Gareth play at Alma de España’s monthly tablao shows here in Victoria.
Juan de Marias, born in Barcelona Spain, trained in classical, flamenco guitar and cante with renowned teachers in Spain and Canada. He has worked as a singer, guitar soloist, accompanist and music arranger with numerous artists in flamenco, jazz, Latin-American folklore and Eastern music, performing in Spain, UK, Chile, Canada, and the US.
Jake Lee “Chinito” began training as a guitar accompanist in Victoria, in 1997. Drawing influence from both traditional and modern sources, Jake has been a frequent collaborator with many BC artists, performing regularly in Victoria and Vancouver. He has participated in the Victoria Flamenco Festival since 2013 and twice in the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival. When he is not performing, Jake is a luthier, specializing in the construction of flamenco guitars.
Iminah Kani began studying the art of flamenco guitar in Victoria, in 2018. Since then, she’s gone on to perform in 4 editions of the Victoria Flamenco Festival, and 3 editions of the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival. Iminah has received numerous awards and scholarships, and she has just recently completed her studies in Sevilla.
Our four guitarists are joined this evening by three local flamenco singers:
In a career spanning over 50 years as flamenco artist and educator, Veronica Maguire has co-founded Alma de España Flamenco Dance Company, produced and directed world-class productions such as Recuerdos in 2011 and Pasajes in 2014, and has performed in countless festivals and performances throughout Western Canada. She currently coordinates the monthly Flamenco Tablaos at the Mint.
Drawn to the raw emotions expressed in flamenco, Mary Storzer has been studying flamenco since 1997. During that time, she has had the good fortune to learn from many incredible artists from North America and Spain. She has performed numerous times in the Victoria Flamenco Festival and around town, most often with her fellow flamencos of Rueda.
Jan Bate “Juana” has been studying flamenco singing (cante) since 1999 in Jerez, Sevilla, Granada, Victoria, and Havana. Since 2013 Juana has performed around Vancouver Island, at the Victoria Flamenco Festival numerous times, and twice at the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival. Currently Juana can be heard singing in Alma de España’s tablao shows, and with her colleagues in Rueda.
For physical events that happen at a specific time. For example a concert, or dance performance. If there are multiple shows, you can still duplicate your event to cover them all.
