Event Description

The Hootenanny Revue featuring Carolyn Mark, Jenny Whiteley, Luther Wright, Sam Allison and Special Guests!

A countrified vaudeville act and delirious spectacle you wont want to miss! The Hootenanny Revue is an action-packed variety show featuring all your favourite Can Frock celebrities. Come for the music. Stay for the dirty jokes.

Not seen on the island since 2008, The Hootenanny Revue returns for an evening of musical collaboration and mirth led by the unshakable showmanship of Carolyn Mark & Jenny Whiteley blended seamlessly in song with Kingston’s Luther Wright and the pride of Peterborough, Sam Allison. Expect all-star guests and probably sparkles…

Join us for a night of toe-tapping tunes and good ol’ fashioned fun at Hotel Wolfe Island. Carolyn Mark and her talented friends will be bringing the house down with their musical performances.

CAROLYN MARK
“Like her close ally Neko Case (with whom she once traded as The Corn Sisters), Mark is a country girl with a wild streak… In a wondrous voice that’s half Kentucky hick, half Rocky Mountain draught, Mark sings of blonde nymphs in lace panties, tedious wives, racy mistresses and knives driven chestward.”
— ★★★★ Uncut

“Carolyn Mark is a headstrong singer with wanderlust and critical-thinking skills that she exercises in songs that never settle for easy answers.”
— Dave Heaton, PopMatters

“Really there’s no roots-country chanteuse as engaging as Mark, whose well-intentioned banter is capable of making even the sourest puss at a show crack a smile.”
— Exclaim!

“Whether she lands on her feet, or ass-over-teakettle, Mark always sounds like she’s having fun.”
— No Depression Magazine

JENNY WHITELEY
Music critics have compared Jenny Whiteley’s striking vocals and songwriting to Emmy Lou Harris and Lucinda Williams, raving that she “swings effortlessly from black-hearted back-porch Americana to Laurel Canyon country”.

She began her musical career as a child, recording with Canadian children’s musician Raffi along with her brother Dan, and performing with her father, blues musician Chris Whiteley and her stepmother Caitlin Hanford, and her uncle, Ken Whiteley. In the 1990s she performed with the bluegrass band Heartbreak Hill. Just prior to that band’s breakup, she released her self-titled debut album in 2001, and followed up with Hopetown in 2004. Both albums won the Juno Award for Best Roots & Traditional Album of the Year. For Jenny’s latest recording, “The Original Jenny Whiteley”, she was been inspired to channel her early influences and musical life, includes several originals “in the style” of early jazz, jug band and old time music.

LUTHER WRIGHT
Luther Wright’s music revisits the classic country stomping-grounds, from the weepers to the two steppers, with satire, originality and frankness.

Luther Wright has been writing, recording and performing music for over 30 years now, from garage/punk outfit The Mugworts, to lead guitar in Sarah Harmer’s pop-rock band, Weeping Tile (WEA/Atlantic), to his own Luther Wright & The Wrongs, known on one hand for their brilliantly executed, country/bluegrass reworking of Pink Floyd’s classic The Wall, as well as six all-original albums, and to boot, they made two cds of original children’s music under the guise of Butterfingers.

SAM ALLISON
Sam Allison is a film and TV composer, music producer and multi-instrumentalist having been in demand as a session and touring musician playing guitar, upright bass and banjo for Sheesham and Lotus, Sarah Harmer, Jenny Whiteley, Esmerine, The Silver Hearts, Serena Ryder, The Royal Jelly Orchestra and dozens more over the past couple of decades.
