Event Description
Contact Dance is not frequently a spectator sport.
That's unfortunate.
The form has strong roots in performance--in the sacred act of witnessing that holds, amplifies, and extends the classic dyad of contact dance into a community of witnesses.
This night returns to those origins and presents contact improvisation as fitting fodder for spectacle.
Both dancers and non-dancers are welcome to attend. The night will include chances to participate in the radical art of contact dance as either participant or spectator--and to switch roles.
Spectators NEED NOT have any contact dance experience, at all. This is a chance to experience contact dance as a frame for deep uncovering and remaking of human stories about what intimacy is and still, after everything, could be. Tender, gentle, radically impactful at times--we gather in a spirit of open-ness.
Kristen Lewis, Artistic Director of Gull Cry Dance will lead exercises to deepen into the art of both dancing and witnessing dance. Invited dance artists will share totally improvised duets, in a group format wherein we surrender all ideas of mastery, of virtuosity to the deep unknown of the moment, god of all.
Snacks will be served and chatting will be permitted, but only between rounds.
