Event Description

Join internationally celebrated “SoulFolk” singer-songwriter and choral composer Lea Morris, on her North American tour in a series of inspiring, participatory events on Vancouver Island!

In a fun, accessible two-hour workshop, experience Lea’s harmonic and polyrhythmic multilayered songs, taught by ear and heart (no need to read sheet music). We’ll sing in celebration of the beautiful contrast of dark and light. All adult singers are welcome, regardless of singing experience. Participants have the option of performing two songs with Lea in her concert!

The workshop is followed by a concert featuring Lea’s powerful vocals and dynamic guitar work, seamlessly blending gospel, jazz, country and R&B, in her unique versions of original, contemporary, and traditional songs. More on Lea below.

Island-based songleader Sylvia Humble is thrilled to collaborate with Lea, bringing her passion for creative harmony and community singing into the mix.

Come to the workshop, the concert, or both!

More about the artists:

Lea Morris’ sound often draws comparisons to Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell. It’s no wonder, with her warm vocals, insightful lyrics and familiar melodies. However, as Lea’s compositions expand to include looped harmonies, vocal percussion and other elements, it’s clear that her SoulFolk style is unique. Born in Washington DC to a father who toured the world playing trumpet in a funk band and a mother who dreamed of opera, Lea began to sing in the Baptist church as soon as she could speak. In high school, she started teaching herself to play acoustic guitar by writing songs. Then, she embarked on an exchange year in Halle, Germany, where the artist dabbled in classical, jazz and pop. Lea’s voice and musicianship are often heard on recordings by Stockfisch Records for whom she frequently provides backing vocals. In fact, she has been nominated for and won several awards, including, Best Vocalist, Best Recording, and Songwriter of the Year. Having shared the stage with luminaries including Odetta and Mavis Staples, Lea is also returning to her roots by composing multi-layered chants and grounding a community singing experience in Braunschweig, Germany, where she currently resides. Visit Lea's website at www.thisislea.com or see her work on YouTube @thisislea.

Nanoose Bay singer-songwriter Sylvia Humble has returned to the stage with a passion after shelving her dream for 20 years to focus on career and family. Sparked by a health crisis, she left her government cubicle, picked up her ukulele, and discovered that her purpose in life is to help others liberate their voice and sing in harmony! From local markets and art shows to the Parksville Outdoor Theatre and Knox United Church, Sylvia now delights audiences with her pure, heartfelt vocals and ukulele strumming, and is known for getting audiences singing. Her inspirations range from Joni Mitchell to Coco Love Alcorn, and her original songs are uplifting and personal. In 2021, Sylvia founded Sing Again community choir, a joyful and informal harmony singing group, which has now grown to serve Nanaimo, Nanoose Bay, and Parksville. She also leads community singalongs at venues large and small, in the great outdoors, and in random flash mobs! Visit Sylvia’s YouTube channel @sylviahumblemusic, or her website: www.sylviahumble.ca
