Victoria Folk Music Society presents Denis Donnelly's Celtic Christmas
7:30pm - 10:00pm
$8 cash only
Event Description
Victoria Folk Music Society weekly gathering; Tonight a shortened open stage at 7:30pm followed by Denis Donnelly's Celtic Christmas at 8:30pm; Norway House, 1110 Hillside Avenue; $8 cash; Everyone welcome!
Well-known local musician, choir director, Irish harper, and long-time Folk Club member Denis Donnelly brings along a group of his musical friends to re-create a celebration of Celtic Yuletide, a “kitchen party” taking place in a home somewhere in a Celtic land, far away and long ago.
Joining Denis on stage will be Lanny Pollet (flute), an ensemble of 9 women from the Soundings Vocal Ensemble, singer/ bodhran player Cathy Baker, singer/storyteller Dick Jackson, and Stage Designer/actor Zelda Dean.
Most all the music will be traditional, arranged by Denis - instrumentals, women’s vocals (solo as well as in in beautiful 3-part harmony) and, yes, sing-alongs! Baked into it all will be Zelda and Dick offering snippets of folklore and history, as well as lovely Yuletide stories from ages past.
Want to know how Yuletide was celebrated on the Shetland Islands? ... How Oliver Cromwell influenced Christmas? ... How a gorgeous Christmas lullaby from western Scotland was written? ... How the Irish harper Turlough O’Carolan dealt with an unwelcome diagnosis? ... How to make a good Wassail Bowl? ... And all the time hear some wonderful and little-known Yuletide music? Then come along!
