Event Description

The Chapel Gallery is pleased to welcome Mixed Media Fibre Artist Barbara McCaffrey's exhibition PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY. The exhibition features her multi-faceted textile art practice and highlights her most recent work.

Memory and history are the inspiration and central elements in Barbara McCaffrey’s work. She is influenced by events that have created emotional and historical value both familial and through travel which have persisted in her memory into textile pieces.

McCaffrey works with a variety of materials including handmade paper, felt and cloth. Her interests lie in the manipulation of images, materials and process, often shifting their context to explore new and unexpected translations. Often she embellishes surfaces and textures to create expressions inspired by travel and relationships. Colour, shape and line enhance the surfaces of her work.

Barbara McCaffrey has a 4-year Diploma in Textiles (with Distinction) as well as a B.F.A. from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary. (Now called Alberta University of the Arts)

Barbara has exhibited widely throughout Alberta and B.C. including the Sooke Fine Arts Show, the Sidney Fine Arts Show and annually with the Vancouver Island Surface Design Group. Her work was also included in the FibreArts Design Book 7, published by Lark Books. She has received numerous ‘Juror’s Choice” Awards for her work which can be found in private collections in Canada and the United States.

“I am aware of the weight and power of memories. I strive to make the invisible, visible by the narrative I display in my work.”
