Event Description

Lost & Found: Wendy Duffield

The funny thing is, that the losing and the finding are interwoven.
Jeanette LeBlanc

These words ring true for Wendy Duffield. As she has said, “We are surrounded by the works of artisans from the past, artifacts still beautiful BUT, once damaged or dated, are often discarded.” However, this is where Wendy comes to the rescue. Collecting these treasures, from needlework to photos, books to stamps, jewellery to dinnerware, etc. she brings them back to life by incorporating them into new pieces.

Wendy’s show Lost & Found runs from July 17th to July 28th in the Westridge Gallery at Coast Collective with the Meet-the-Artist Reception on Sunday, July 21st from 1 to 3. Wendy’s art is best experienced in person because each piece invites one to ponder, to wonder, to discover, and to reminisce. Wendy will also be at the Coast Collective Gallery on July 20th from 1 to 4 and will demonstrate some of her techniques on July 27th and 28th from 1 to 5.

The range of her handmade pieces is really quite astounding – one of a kind jewellery, wearable books, music boxes, and small objects, all fashioned around, and inspired by, mementos, relics, artifacts, and discarded treasures. Some explore the lives and careers of 20th Century women, others celebrate the history of aviation, or examine physiology – and this hardly begins to scratch the surface.

Operated by the Society for Arts on the South Island (SASI), whose mission statement is to nurture British Columbia arts and culture … through the production and support of showcases of fine art and craft, the provision of arts education programs, public performances, and special community cultural events.

The Coast Collective Art Centre is open 11:00 to 5:00 Wednesday through Sunday.  You can reach us at 250-391-5522 or email [email protected] for more information.
