Peers Powers Up Raises Funds for HeroWork Vital Renovation
VICTORIA, BC, Wednesday, April 10, 2019 — Peers Victoria Resource Society launches Peers Powers Up to raise funds for a “radical renovation” with HeroWork. With 200+ homeless sex workers and another 900+ housed but heavily stigmatized, Peers provides a non-judgemental space, food, clothes, outreach, health and legal support.
Peers Victoria Resource Society has been providing outreach, harm reduction and education services for sex workers for more than 20 years. Currently it is legal to sell sex, but illegal to buy it. This presents a tricky reality in terms of keeping sex workers safe for an industry that may be heavily stigmatized, but is not going anywhere.
The Peers Powers Up campaign includes a raffle. 400 tickets to be sold at $50 each, with the winner having $10,000 for the trip of their choice booked by the Peers volunteers travel agent. Also, on April 25, there is a dinner/party with a family-style feast by artist Alison Bigg (Devour) and Andrea Duncan (food sponsored by Abeego), signature cocktail and mocktail with Emily Henderson and Chili Berisoff of Bodega with entertainment from the Cheesecake Burlesque and Electra Pole Art Productions at the Oddfellows on April 25. Driftwood Brewery and Bona Vini Wines are also sponsoring this important event. The evening will carry on with incredible beats from DJ Gano.
The Peers Powers Up campaign is about more than fundraising. It is about raising Peer’s profile, creating memorable experiences for many and also channeling dollars towards positive, safe, respectful and secure futures.
