The theme, Little Fires, is based on the rituals of Charshanbe Suri, the festival celebrating the Persian New Year. Nowruz, the first day of the Iranian calendar falls on the spring equinox. In the month leading up to Nowruz, the holiday is celebrated by gathering together, lighting firecrackers and jumping over little bonfires as a cleansing ritual.
So come, jump over the bonfire, cleanse yourself of past grievances, and dance to some of Vancity's top emerging artists!
Kel Roman
Kel Roman is a laid-back singer/songwriter whose interesting chord progressions and emotive vocal melodies are a fresh take on alternative rock. Kel has played the Vancouver club circuit for years fronting several different projects. He has made appearances at popular Vancouver venues such as The Railway Club, Venue, The Roxy, Studio, The Rickshaw, and many others. Kel Roman is currently working on his debut project titled, ‘Into The Frequencies,’ with producer, Christopher Wong, of The Faceplants and Ria Mae. The project is to be released as five singles which cohesively work together as one. The music ranges from bright, optimistic pop rock to introspective folk, hitting all the marks in between. Kel Roman’s first single is set to come out soon.
Tissa Rahim
Vancouver songstress Tissa Rahim weaves together her effortless talent for the R&B and soul genres with a multi-generational affinity for Persian music as she debuts a rousing solo project after years sharing the stage with the band The Bleeding Horse Express. Tissa is an established west-coast musician with a 40-city North American tour under her belt, and she has worked with producers like 100 Monkeys’ Jack Rathbone (of Twilight Fame). She was one of 24 Magazine’s “Top 24 under 24,” and has performed at House of Blues in New Orleans, the Gramercy Theatre in New York, and the quintessential local jazz and soul club Guilt and Co. In 2017, Tissa released a 5-song EP, "Rosewater", and also appears on Gabe.Sx' 2018 album, "Vancouver Sessions", as a performer, songwriter and producer. With a voice that has the freedom of Florence Welch and the depth of Lauryn Hill, her upcoming singles are sure to capture the attention of the Pacific Northwest yet again.
SOLA
SOLA is Adriana Parejas wanting to explore a long awaited solo career that was sparked by fronting local Vancouver soul/funk collective MudFunk from 2014-2019. Adriana has been singing as far back as she can remember and started writing songs when was 23 years old. That passion has never left her and it continues to burn as she is mapping a new path with this project. Her lyrics are a reflection of her story of mending a broken heart and understanding the worries of finding and exploring new love. Jazz and RnB are what inspires her vocal style and guitar sounds. Recently stepping onto this path in May of 2018 she already has recruited two other band members Trevor Ainsworth, drummer and Tyson Mcilroy, bass to give her songs a new life with more rhythm and feel. She will be heading into 2019 with plans of building a bigger band and bringing her songs across Canada and beyond.
