Event Description
David Sinclair and Keith Bennett return to Blue Frog with their extraordinary musicianship and quirky musical buffet.
Sinclair plays acoustic guitar with untouched grace, dexterity and wisdom. His lifelong dedication to the instrument is evident in every phrase. Watching him play is an emotional ride, from excitement at his warp speed picking, to amazement at his guitar/percussion multi-tasking, to being stirred by his strumming of a tender ballad.
Bennett’s harmonica playing is expressive and nuanced like none other, and he excels at improvisation. With each hole of a chromatic harmonica containing four notes, it’s mind boggling to watch Bennett extract fast, complex phrasing from the instrument. He also multi-tasks by doubling improv on harmonica and guitar.
In addition to their instrumental wizardry, Sinclair and Bennett sing beautiful vocal harmonies a la Everly Brothers. Together, they are pure magic.
The duo’s arrangements can only be described as eccentric, with originals that include “Celtic-inspired surf music” and “an illuminated Tai Chi stickman”. Innovative twists on standard tunes (“what if U2 was Hungarian?”) complete a repertoire that spans big band, classical, blues, roots and gypsy jazz.
Inherently modest, gentle-spirited individuals, Sinclair and Bennett bring authentic exuberance to their music, playing straight from their souls. Listeners are drawn in by their pure, emotional energy.
Sinclair shared the stage for many years with k.d. lang and Sarah McLachlan, and has performed on the shows of David Letterman, Jay Leno, Arsenio Hall, Saturday Night Live, the Grammys and the Junos. Bennett has played with Supertramp, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, at Canucks games for a decade and was North America’s top medalist at the World Harmonica Festival.
Each Sinclair & Bennett concert is a special evening for another lucky audience, whose hands, feet and voices inevitably join in with the band.
