In the desert lands of rural India, men set rules for a reason. Widow Rani, her friend Lajjo and an erotic dancer named Bijli live every day under those rules. Rani lives her days humbly in an earthen hut. Lajjo lives hers a bit more happily and luxuriously via a husband. And Bijli enjoys every day in a grand Bollywood-style burlesque show.
However, rules only work well when nothing changes. When Rani finds out that she must find a teenage bride for her son, the social fabric gets a good hard tug! Her son has become an entitled brat and Rani discovers that her would-be daughter-in-law has an innocent lover tagging along. Rani seeks guidance from her wiser friend Lajjo. The men seek comfort in the daily erotic shows of Bijli, even though Bijli knows her youth and sexual powers are failing. Soon enough, these three very socially different women soon come together to find a new path for themselves.
Writer-director Yadav's Parched is a movie with a great deal of heart in its social-realist drama. Enough to remind to remind you of these women's great humanity and more than enough to outdo the cheesy antics of more mainstream Indian fare. If you like a good Bollywood number or two, don't despair though because Parched has that covered to.
