Event Description

Join us for our first event of 2016! Take a break from your resoultions, or fulfill one by reading at our all genre open mic. Make sure you arrive on time to get a space in the open mic. 5 minutes per person. Anything that can be read, said or shown is welcome.

This month features:

MICHAEL LAPOINTE is a writer and critic from Vancouver. He contributes to the Times Literary Supplement, and his work has appeared in The Walrus, The Atlantic, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. Michael will be reading fiction at the event.

HEATHER FRASER graduated from UVic in 2014 with a BFA in Writing (minor in Religious Studies). Her poems have appeared in Poetry is Dead, Poetry Lives Here (a supplementary issue of Contemporary Verse 2), and This Side of West. Heather was awarded second place in Grain Magazine’s 2015 Short Grain Contest for her poem “Parasomnia.” She is currently working as an administrative clerk at UVic while completing a certificate in Professional Communication from UBC Continuing Studies.

SAMANTHA BAHAN is in her final term completing a BA in Religious Studies, she also holds a BSc in Psychology. Samantha has a publication with The Arbutus Review and is a JCURA (Jamie Cassels Undergraduate Research Award) recipient this year.

Samantha and Joey Takeda will have a conversation about Samantha's research identifying some of the sources of millennial spirituality, such as culture shifts during
the 1960s and 70s and the secularization of the Canadian public education system. They will explore how she works to define a new form of spirituality unique to millennials. She suggests that the phrase “spiritual but not religious” is no longer sufficient for understanding the spirituality of religiously unaffiliated individuals.
