Unbuckled. Sunshine gleaming on summer skin. September fields, crisp and harvest fresh. Refreshing, ice cold drinks and the slow sizzle of the barbeque. Big hitters and hot heartbreakers. A grand ole Saturday in the park. Let your hair down, kick up your boots, loosen up and get Unbuckled.
Brought to Stanley Park by Wet Ape Productions (the team behind Harvest Haus, Keloha, and Center of Gravity), Vancouver’s Ultimate Backyard BBQ will combine casual sporting competitions, picnic eats and drinks, alt-country and bluegrass rhythms, and plenty of good times all in the heart of the city. From 2 pm until dusk (7:30 pm) on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, the Brockton Baseball Diamond will get Dixie fried, down home, and fully countrified. It’s an escape to an unpretentious community gathering, replete with hay bales, pickup trucks, burlap galore, picnic blankets, a western style bar, and a very special hubcap collection.
Where urbane meets rhinestone, Unbuckled is The Social where everyone is encouraged to sport their best hillbilly outfits—tanks and Daisy Dukes, overalls and cowboy hats, big, bad, bold buckles, boots and heels, and, of course, the sexiest cuts in plaid finery.
And there’s nothing like a little friendly country style sports competition where participants can sign up teams of 8-15 people and win unique prizes, including the Champion Unbuckled Belt Buckles for the top teams. With fun as the ultimate goal, games include the following:
Frontier Pimping: teams book a 15’x15’ plot of grass (a yard) to decorate, hang out in, and show off to other guests, with prizes for the most awesome yards.
Footloose Foosball: get inside the hay bale perimeter, grab your bar, and play the wildest human sized foosball this side of the Appalachians.
Hillbilly Hustle: wheelbarrow races, three legged races, potato sack races and the like.
Heartbreak Hoe Down: in this contest of staying power, participants compete to see who will be the last person dancing.
On the Chain Gang: teams walk the line in this traditional tug o’ war game of strength and chicanery.
King of the Rodeo: get on, hold on, and stay on the mechanical bull.
Tarnation Toss: heave your water balloon the furthest without making a splash.
Over the course of this hard playin’ day, live bluegrass and roots rock will belt out the soundtrack, along with costumed hosts running the activities and making sure everyone gets the solid gold treatment and real southern comfort.
Which wouldn’t be complete without rib tickling BBQ and thirst-quenching beverages. Guests can indulge in beer can chicken, smokies, corn-dogs, burgers, steaks, ribs, corn on the cob, and watermelon, and refresh with their beverage of choice anywhere at the fully licensed site.
