Event Description
Considered to be one of the pivotal founders of the current Americana music scene, Alvin (www.davealvin.net) formed the popular roots rock/R&B band The Blasters with his brother Phil in 1979. Throughout his long and critically acclaimed career, the California born native has mixed varied musical and literary influences into his own unique, updated version of traditional American music. Alvin who describes his songs as "a big, messy melting pot," combines elements of blues, folk, R&B, rockabilly, Bakersfield country, and garage rock and roll with lyrical inspiration from local writers such as Raymond Chandler, Gerald Locklin and Charles Bukowski.
The Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter's 30 year musical career proves his statement. From the loud, aggressive rock and roll style of The Blasters, to the contemplative acoustic storytelling of his solo albums KING OF CALIFORNIA and BLACKJACK DAVID, to the traditional folk of his Grammy Award winning PUBLIC DOMAIN, or to the electric blues of ASHGROVE, Alvin has always managed to unite seemingly disparate genres into a cohesive vision of contemporary roots music. In DAVE ALVIN AND THE GUILTY WOMEN and WEST OF THE WEST, a tribute to native California songwriters, Alvin further expands his musical range by adding doo wop, western swing, surf, norteno music, and psychedelic jams to an already eclectic mix.
The rules Alvin has followed throughout his 24 year career as a solo artist were discarded during the creation of his 11th album ELEVEN ELEVEN. For the first time, Alvin wrote songs while touring and recording with the Guilty Women. Using musicians he had not collaborated with since his days with the Blasters, Alvin's latest release features duets such as the simmering blues number "What's Up With Your Brother," gentle country number "Manzanita" and the whimsical "Two Lucky Bums. Alvin's songs have been recorded by a famed artists and groups such as Los Lobos, Little Milton, Joe Ely, Dwight Yoakam, James McMurtry, and X. His songs have also been featured in many movies and television shows including The Sopranos, True Blood, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Crybaby, Miss Congeniality, and From Dusk to Dawn.
