Event Description
Completed in 1982, Passio is the most popular vocal work by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and tells the story of Jesus’ crucifixion, according to the Gospel of John. It represents a culmination of the composer’s famous tintinnabuli style, a minimalist approach to writing that is based on Gregorian chant. This performance, the first in Vancouver Island, features Vox Humana, soloists Isaiah Bell (tenor), Mark Donnelly (countertenor), Elizabeth MacIsaac (soprano), and Nathan McDonald (bass), as well as a small chamber orchestra.
Performed under the ethereal dome at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, additional works include Lighten Mine Eyes by Bo Hansson, Laudate by Knut Nystedt and the world premiere of a commissioned work, Compassio, by Victoria’s own David Archer.
