About Paper Beat Scissors:
www.myspace.com/paperbeatscissors
Paper Beat Scissors spawned from the bedroom compositions of uprooted-Brit Tim Crabtree. The music centres around finger-picked guitar and haunted vocals. The lyrical themes, often obsessing on communication-breakdown, become blocked and unclear as the voice
melds into the instrumentation, occasionally cutting to the forefront with a clear, scattered image.
Performing these songs live a collective has formed around Tim. The sonic possibilities are broadened through orchestral instrumentation, electronic sampling, processing and beat
generation, and a desire to use anything close at hand as an instrument (bags of garbage, tables, plastic wrap and abandoned air organs found on the sidewalk).
Musicians with national exposure have added their own colours to the experience including Tanya Davis, Chuck Blazevic (Dreamsploitation), Kyle Cunjak (Snailhouse), Kris Pope (Caledonia, Acres and Acres) and Leif Vollebekk. The group expands and contracts to complement performance spaces, but the performances are always intimate and intense.
The band has enjoyed a fast rise in Halifax, making appearances in the Coast's Best of Music poll and New Music issue and becoming firm favourites of workaholic music blog Herohill.
Their national reputation is growing following CBC radio play, a CBC 3 'track of the day', and charting
across university radio stations for their debut CD Flicker. The band has also garnered accolades for their Flicker video by stop-motion animator Chris Tootell (Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Coraline).
On the live scene, 2009 saw festival headline slots, 4 Eastern Canadian tours and sharing the stage with the likes of Snowblink, Catherine MacLellan and Julie Fader.
2010 will see the release of a full-length album, a solo national train tour in April, a festival-
heavy summer, and an autumn and winter touring the States and Europe.
