Event Description
On Saturday, November 14th, the Victoria Bluegrass Association presents two award-winning singer/songwriters, both of whom are steeped in North American musical traditions.
Opening Act: Old Man Luedecke
Old Man Luedecke is not old. A Canadian, living in Chester, Nova Scotia, he is an amazing virtuoso on the clawhammer banjo. His upbeat anthems on edgy themes have been captivating audiences for years at festivals, coffeehouses and other venues throughout North America. In 2009, Luedecke’s solo recording Proof of Love won the Juno Award for Best Roots and Traditional Album of the Year: Solo. www.oldmanluedecke.ca
Feature Act: Tim O’Brien
Tim O’Brien is an accomplished, self-taught multi-instrumentalist, a powerful singer, and a talented songwriter whose career spans three decades and several genres. A West Virginia native with deep American folk roots, O’Brien started out playing pure bluegrass with Hot Rize. He has since moved to Nashville and has recorded with Kathy Mattea, Guy Clark, The Chieftains, Darrell Scott, Maura O’Connell, and Steve Earle, to name but a few.
While in demand as a session musician and a collaborator, Tim O’Brien continued to pursue his own musical muse with more than a dozen albums to his credit. In both 1993 and 2006 Tim won the International Bluegrass Music Association’s award for Male Vocalist of the Year, and in 2006, his CD Fiddler’s Green won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. His latest release, Chameleon is a solo project.
This concert spotlights O’Brien’s original insightful lyrics, melodic flexible voice and expertise as a solo performer on the fiddle, guitar, bouzouki and possibly banjo.
