Cellist Paul Marleyn is joined by outstanding participants in the Victoria Conservatory of Music Summer String Academy.
An active chamber musician, teacher, and soloist, cellist Paul Marleyn has performed throughout Europe, China, Canada, and the United States.
His recordings include cello sonatas of Shostakovich, Schnittke, and Prokofiev, works for clarinet and strings by Bliss, Rawsthorne, and Routh, and works by John Cage.
He was a member of the Borante Piano Trio from 1991 to 1997. Since 2000 Paul has been director of the Agassiz Music Festival and the Agassiz Chamber Players series in Winnipeg. Mr. Marleyn also has a special interest in new music and has commissioned new works by Bramwell Tovey, Kevin Volans, Michael Matthews, Glenn Buhr, Jim Hiscott and Rodion Schedrin.
In 1997 Paul was appointed Professor of Cello and Chamber Music at the University of Manitoba. Paul values teaching very highly, and has given master classes at the Royal Academy, Royal Northern College, Birmingham Conservatory, and Liverpool University in the UK, in Xian, Shen Yang and Jinan in China, Lawrence University USA, and University of Western Ontario, Alberta College, Mount Royal College and Lethbridge University in Canada. In 1994 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.
Future engagements include the Dvor�k Concerto with the Belgrade Radio Orchestra, a recital tour of Yugoslavia, and a return trip to China and Taiwan. Later in the year Paul will be featured in a new CD release of works by Jim Hiscott on the CBC Records label.
