Event Description

Canadian-Mongolian Jazz Fusion Project Tours BC
August brings a very special musical event that blends the freshest Canadian jazz with the ancient sounds of horse head fiddles and throat singing from the Mongolian Steppe.
Northern Lights Quartet of Calgary will be performing with Altai Khangai (pronounced “all-tie hung-guy”) of Mongolia in BC in Victoria on Wednesday, August 26 at 7:30 pm in the Alix Goolden Hall and in Vancouver on Thursday, August 27 at 8:00 pm at The Cellar Jazz Club.
Northern Lights plays spacious music that reflects the expanse of the Canadian prairies. Altai-Khangai performs traditional Mongolian music. The horse-head fiddle, or morin khuur (pronounced “moor-in hur” roll the “r” if you can), khuchuur (pronounced “who-chur”) and throat singing known as khoomii (“who-me”) evoke the grasslands, deserts, mountains, horses and nomads of Mongolia, the land that knows no fences. Together, they create an entirely new sound, weaving these two traditions together.
Northern Lights includes Keith Smith (guitar), Simon Fisk (bass), Robin Tufts (percussion) and Deb Rasmussen (vocals). Altai Khangai includes:
• Odnoo playing Khuuchir (pronounced “who-chur”)
• Ganbolt on Morin Khuur (pronounced “moor-in hur” and roll the “r” if you can)
• Ganzorig on Morin Khuur and singing Khuumii (“who-me”), Mongolia’s traditional throat singing.
Mark these dates. Northern Lights – Altai Khangai in Victoria at Alix Goolden Hall on August 26th and in Vancouver at The Cellar on August 27th. Full tour details are available at www.nl4tet.ca
