Event Description

The Concordia Choir, widely considered one of the world’s premier undergraduate vocal ensembles that tours the world, sings for royalty and garners praise from critics, will perform in Vancouver on February 24 (7 pm) at Ryerson United Church.

The 74-voice choir continues to affirm its reputation as one of the nation’s finest a cappella choirs and a leader in interpreting and advancing the Lutheran choral tradition. The choir’s long and distinguished history dates back to its beginning in 1920. The group has performed in nearly every major hall in the United States including Carnegie Hall , Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and Riverside Church.

The choir has toured extensively throughout Europe and was recently featured on a BBC radio show broadcast across the United Kingdom. It has also performed for the King and Queen of Norway and sung with The King’s Singers. The choir’s recordings are distributed nationwide making it one of the top-selling college choirs in the United States.

The Concordia Choirs programme at Ryerson includes J. S. Bach’s Singet dem Herren ein Neues Lied, works by Thompson, Gretchaninoff, Górecki, Biebl, and Schnittke, a selection of ethnic songs from many cultures, and a selection of hymns, folk songs and spirituals.

Dr. René Clausen is a renowned conductor, composer and arranger. In 1998 he created the René Clausen Choral School, an intensive five-day program for choral conductors, and is the founder of the René Clausen Music Company.

His compositions and arrangements are published by Roger Dean Publishing Company, Shawnee Press in the Mark Foster Catalog, Santa Barbara Music Publishing, Hal Leonard, Walton and Augsburg Fortress.
