As frontman for Moist, David Usher conquered the Canadian rock world at a time when grunge was ruling the alt-rock airwaves. The band’s debut, Silver, went quadruple platinum in its home country. Even then, David’s passionate intensity and songwriting talent shone through the group’s rock arrangements. Since embarking on a career as a solo artist, David has released five albums including his latest, Strange Birds. His most aggressive and consistent solo album yet, the disc has a lush, guitar-driven sound. “The Music”, the first single from the disc, is currently #6 on the iTunes pop chart.
Raised in England, Canada, Malaysia, and Thailand, David now resides in New York’s East Village. He has won 5 Junos, including the 2002 Pop Album of the Year, and has seen 10 different singles go to #1 in Canada, and 10 more reach the top 10, both as a solo artist and in Moist. He has had top 10 and top 20 singles all over the world. David is also known for his humanitarian efforts, and has traveled to Burma to film a documentary for WarChild on children affected by war.
Awake Is The New Sleep is Ben Lee’s definitive album to date and first for New West. It reunites him with producer Brad Wood (Liz Phair, Smashing Pumpkins) and was recorded in Brad’s home studio in Los Angeles.
Ben Lee was born 26 years ago in Sydney, Australia. Ben’s musical coming out was at the age of 14 with a poppy, punk rock band called Noise Addict, circa 1993. “Discovered” by heavy hipsters Sonic Youth and The Beastie Boys the group’s profile rose quickly. As Ben describes it, “It was the perfect teenage rock thing.” But clearly more ambitious than his band-mates, it wasn’t long before Ben began concentrating on a solo career.
