Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and unique rock bands of the last decade, Deftones appeal to a broad range of music fans, from those who love hard, heavy, explosive rock to those who appreciate the group’s willingness to experiment with different musical styles. Along with the musicians’ considerable chops and the group’s refusal to be pigeon-holed, Deftones rise above its competition due to Chino Moreno’s fiercely intelligent lyrics. On last year’s B-Sides & Rarities collection, Deftones proved just how versatile they can be by collecting the Sacramento band’s covers of songs by postpunk outfit Jawbox (“Savory”) and UK dream-pop progenitors the Cocteau Twins (“Wax and Wane”), along with choice tracks by the Smiths, Duran Duran, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The disc handily tied up the Grammy Award-winning experimental alternative rock band’s career up until then—a career that has seen the release of such groundbreaking albums as Adrenalin and Around the Fur, as well as the platinum-selling White Pony and 2003’s self-titled disc. Last year’s Saturday Night Wrist was the group’s first album of all-new material since 2003, and the songs “Mein” and “Hole in the Earth” have been steadily rising on the modern rock charts. This summer, the band is launching a new tour in support of the album, which has so far sold 200,000 copies.
