Local urban buzz artists Kia Kadiri follows up her highly successful September 4th show at Sonar with a much-anticipated appearance at the Piccadilly Pub on Saturday October 4th. Kadiri has long been a force on the local scene, but the last several months have seen her profile grow nationally with coverage on Much Music, CBC AM, Toronto's Exclaim Magazine and a photo feature in the Georgia Straight on August 28th. She also has 2 tracks on the just released West Coast Women In Rhyme compilation, distributed by Fusion III and featuring the best female MCs in the region. The dynamic live performer has had a great summer, playing a string of festival and club shows, while putting the finishing touches on her FACTOR funded solo debut, due out in early 2004. She is also heavily featured as a guest vocalist and performer on Kinnie Starr 's latest album and video which continues to garner impressive international airplay and support.
Whether it's opening for K-os at the Commodore in front of 1000 people as part of this year's Vancouver International Jazz Festival or performing solo and unplugged at New Music West's Songwriters Showcase back in May, Kia always brings the house down with her powerful stage presence and visceral approach to her music. Backed by her whip smart 5 piece band, she is a force to be reckoned with and with a recent spate of gigs under their belt, the combo (featuring Scott Sanft/keys, Tim Proznick/drums, Darren Parris/bass, Rob Hamilton/guitar and DJ Phonograph) has been grooving hard - pushing Kadiri's razor sharp rhyming skills to a new level and creating a live experience that is unmatched on the local scene.
Opening for Kadiri is Greenlaw Ave , a Toronto based group who merge down tempo soul and funk with ambient roots and dub featuring the shimmering vocals of Skyla J .
