After putting on consistently stellar shows at several previous JazzFests, New York-based pianist Kenny Werner is always welcome in this town. With over two-dozen albums as a leader and 50 as a sideman, few jazz artists can match him for breadth or finesse. His rare mixture of power, intensity and lyrical introspection defines Werner as a keyboard master whose work with artists such as Archie Shepp and David Holland is always precise and poetic. This is Werner’s first appearance here with his quintet, which will showcase his more fiery, full-throttle approach to jazz. Sharing the front line will be long-time collaborator Randy Brecker, a dazzling trumpet virtuoso with decades of experience. Standing shoulder to shoulder with him will be tenor titan David Sanchez, one of the reigning stylists on his horn. Rounding out the rhythm section is drummer Dylan Vanderschyff and bassist Scott Colley. This is what jazz is all about! “Werner has become one of our most literate and visceral pianists.” – JazzTimes
