About

Glenn Spicer

Biography and Statement:

I was born 1947 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. After graduating with a B.Sc. in Biology at the University of Guelph, I worked there as a scientific illustrator, then as a scientific sculptor for the construction of the new Dinosaur Gallery of the Royal Ontario Museum. After working for a time as a Keeper at the Metropolitan Toronto Zoological Park, I moved to Vancouver, BC in 1976 where received my Professional Teachers Certification in Fine Arts and Biology. I then studied at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design under the accomplished sculptors Mark Prent, George Ramel, and George Norris. I was hired by the Vancouver Aquarium as the Senior Display Artist for the duration of the construction of the award winning Graham Amazon Gallery. In 1984 I moved to Maple Bay on Vancouver Island and established the Studio Metamorphoses and worked with Karl Schutz on the Chemainus Festival of Murals completing 4 public sculptures. I designed (with CADD), and built a spacious house and studio (working in all aspects of the construction) by the ocean overlooking picturesque Saltspring Island.

The natural beauty of British Columbia is reflected extensively in my creations. I also draw upon my rich and varied background experience to create expressive realism in figurative and wildlife renditions and carefully executed stylized and abstracted forms.

My sculptures are cast, carved, and\or constructed in bronze, copper, steel, fiberglass, reinforced concrete, glass, stone, tile, and mixed media. My stained glass work is often detailed using sandblasting, etching, and carving on a variety of flat-rolled and hand blown coloured glass. My graphics include illustration, photography, painting, and printmaking.

I have experience in most facets of public art, working with administration, committees, municipalities, architects, engineers, and contractors. I was the Vice President of the Cowichan Valley Arts Council for 3 years and was recently given the City of Duncan’s Perpetual Artist Award.
