The six members of Edmonton’s Latin dance band Bomba are the real deal. Although schooled in traditional song forms such as timba, rumba, salsa and son, they have incorporated jazz and funk influences to synthesize a fiery dance music that is irresistible and musically adventurous. Founded a decade ago by Chilean-born drummer Mario Allende, this sextet is co-lead by bassist Rubim de Toledo from Brazil. Thanks to lots of international touring and their three CDs, this band of “next generation” Latin veterans has melded together the musical traditions of South and North America into an incendiary dance-floor phenomenon. Bomba played here five years ago and we’re delighted to have them back. With Raul Tabera drums/vocals, Aldo Aguirre violin, Luisito Orbegoso percussion/lead vocals and Toto Berriel percussion/vocals. “They are one of Canada’s top Latin jazz bands.” – Edmonton Journal
