Wynton Marsalis is a man who wears many hats: trumpeter, composer, Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and music director of the
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO), comprising 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today, has been the Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra since 1988.
The world-renowned big band will perform a wide variety of music including masterworks by Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and others as well as original compositions to the newly arranged music of Chick Corea and selections from JLCO’s most recent CD release,
Vitoria Suite.
Vitoria Suite is a new extended work by Marsalis that uses the impulse of the blues as a foundation to jointly explore the music of two worlds and two cultures: the jazz and blues of North America and the indigenous music of the Basque region and flamenco of Spain.
The JLCO swings into Victoria for the TD Victoria International JazzFest, their third appearance here since 2005.
