Gord Phillips -The Northlands Own - Ode to Stompin Tom Connors
The musical tale of a man that told the stories of a country and everyone in it. My way to say thanks and carry on the lore for many more to hear.
Special thanks goes out to all the people and places that made this video possible.
Dale Baglo - video production, Paul Wagorn - bass/shaker and production/engineering of the song, Pedro on Drums, Disguise the limit, Saanich Heritage Acres for the venue, Vancouver Island model Engineer Society for letting us ride the steamtrain.
Lyrics - The Northlands Own by Gord Phillips
This heres a tale of a man we knew
from coast to coast his song was true
about this land and the people all around
He'd weave some lore about some place
and fill the bar till there was no space
all the while his boot would stomp the ground
he'd keep good time on that plywood
realin ryhme oh so good
tellin us about a Lemington tomata
from the manin the moon to the Redo Canal
PEI we know so well bout
Bud the spud
that ole potata
His name is Stompin tom
come on and sing along
his voice echos through every little town
his boot has worn the floor
from Sooke to Labrador
He's a trubador
The Northlands Own
Second verse
How it all began
His ma was poor and his dad was gone
all he had was this here song
pen guitar and the people he would meet
He left his home around fifteen
hit the road that hikin scene
travelled around onhis own two feet
He'd been livin hand to mouth
north east west and south
got his first gig at the Maple Leaf Hotel
He was broke and short a dime
for a beer he bought that time
bartender said "to get this beer you'll play"
So he played three sets for that whole night
had everyone up and feelin alright
by that time on his life would take a turn
Black shirt black pants, black stetson hat
the famous boots
the plywood that he'd wear out after every single show
His name is Stompin Tom
he wrote ten million songs
bout everything and everyone one around
his boot has worn the floor
from Sarnia to the Northshore
and played his songs to the nation far and wide
and he wrote alot of songs
gonna tell bout a few of them now
is everybody ready
here we go
Big joe Mufferaw paddled into Mattawa
Margos got the cargo ya Reggies got he rig
the gumboot clogeroo
I am the wind
the Donellys pride
and little Joey Tuktuk
Back breakin leaf smokin Tillsonburg
the Martin Hartwell story
the good ole hockey game
the snowmobile song
Sudbury saturday night
the Ketchup song
and a real canadian girl

the comsumer
Thank you Gataen Lapine for giving Tom his first job
Thank you tom
you got me through my college years
well I didnt go to college
but you got me through anyway
Oh his name is Stompin Tom
come on and sing along
his voice echos through every little town
his boot has worn the floor
from Sooke to Labrador
He's a trubador
The Northlands Own
Enjoy
