Makana began playing Hawaiian slack key guitar at the age of 10.
He was taught by Bobby Moderow (protege of master Ray Kane) and the
legendary Sonny Chillingworth.

Makana was a Top 3 winner in Guitar Player Magazine's 2008 National Guitar
Superstar Competition
Kaua'i County awarded Makana an "Artist for Peace Award" in 2005 in
recognition of his outstanding support of community and continuing message
of peace.
Makana has contributed to 2 Grammy-nominated albums as well as the
soundtrack of Academy Award-winning film "The Descendants".
