Event Description

The Fifty Fifty Arts Collective presents an exciting collection of new works by local artists and illustrators, all inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Since their original publication in 1865 Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass have had an unprecedented influence on the visual arts. The books are renowned for their humorous use of logic and word play and their sparklingly unique characters. Originally illustrated by Carroll himself, then most famously by John Tenniel, Alice has continued to inspire countless artists and illustrators including Arthur Rackham, Tove Jansson, Salvador Dali, Ralph Steadman and Kiki Smith. This exhibition gathers together the work of over 15 contemporary artists working in BC.

Each of the artists invited to participate in this show were selected by Luck because their work contains elements of Wonderland; either through their use of text and language, their representations of human and animal characters or their otherworldly atmospheres. The exhibition combines work from emerging and established artists, many of them local to Victoria and displays a wide breadth of media that includes painting, illustration, film, photography, sculpture, jewellery design and printmaking.

The opening night of Curiouser will see the Fifty Fifty gallery space transformed into a miniature Wonderland with a tea party style reception. All works will be available for sale and accompanied by limited edition prints.
