Karel has composed and produced music for over 500 television episodes, and countless animated shorts, docs, and films.
He has released 15 recordings, beginning with the piano solo Keys, then a series of music and nature sounds CDs (see www.tandem-music.com), two jazz trio CDs (Cat Fud and kr3+), and solo concert CDs (Blue/Green and Sweets). His latest releases (in 2008) are Do You Hear What I Hear, Tea Favourites, and Nature Boy. His latest is Birdsong in the Parkade, recorded on a Steinway grand in the lowest level of the View Street Parkade, with music based on bird songs collected on a cross-Canada camping trip.
Outside of his musical career, Karel has served two terms as mayor in his home municipality, the District of Highlands, and was reelected to Council in 2014.
In his spare time, Karel still loves to play the piano and plays in clubs, concert halls and in the studio whenever possible. He writes jazz tunes for his own and other groups, and has played with jazz greats such as Bud Shank, Ian MacDougall, Pat LaBarbera, Don Clark, Floyd Standifer, Roy Reynolds and many well-known vocalists. He's been bandleader for Howie Mandel, Bob Newhart, Rich Little (and his lesser know brother Fred), Shari Lewis (with Lambchop) and Ted Knight. He's regularly asked to play at jazz festivals as both leader and sideman.
